Frequently asked questions
Here are some of the most common questions we receive from cat owners.
Are your groomers experienced with cat grooming? Groomer Sheryl has 25 years of professional cat grooming experience, completed Grooming School thru Petco in Lansing, Illinois for both Basic Pet Grooming & Advanced Cat Grooming finishing with a score of 99% (which was their highest score.) Many of the cats we groom are pictured on our FB page.
How long will my cats grooming take? We strive to complete grooming efficiently & safely. Matted cats, Super Senior cats may take longer (but we prefer to schedule a few mini sessions for a groom rather than make a cat go through a long session). One hour and 30 minutes hours is standard time for the majority of the cat grooms.
What kind of products do you use for cat grooming? We only use cat-safe products. The majority of shampoos, creme rinse & conditioner is so gentle that they can be used for bathing rabbits & ferrets. Unless requested, no colognes or perfumes are used on cats due to cats having very sensitive noses and the colognes can cause them undue stress. The shampoos/creme rinse/conditioner tends to smell good by themselves. (All of the products used are products that Groomer Sheryl has used & loved on her own cats, some for many years.)
Do cats really NEED a bath? While cats groom themselves, they are swallowing excess hair, as well as the bacteria they pick up from walking around & from anyones hands who touch them and it's impossible to get themselves clean right down to the skin like a water bath can. Baths are good for healthy skin. Most cats love to be clean. They try, but all they are doing is trying to lick a sweater clean. They really should get used to baths ASAP. There might come a time when they need a flea bath. They might get old, can no longer groom themselves and have "accidents" that would require frequent bathing. If they are already used to baths, it makes it so much easier on them.
A common misconception is that all cats need to be drugged or sedated for grooming to have a "fear-less groom". We beg to differ. We strive to provide a REAL fear free grooming experience, proving that many cats who are exposed to a variety of experiences can be groomed without sedation.
What makes your grooming experience different and better for cats compared to other groomers?
Many groomers groom cats because they HAVE to, but they don't like cats. Groomer Sheryl LOVES cats & cat grooming!! We offer a true fear-free grooming experience. Groomer Sheryl talks to the cats throughout the process, constantly reassuring and encouraging them. Many cats have come to LOVE their spa time with us!
What reassurances can you offer to cat owners nervous about their cat's first grooming appointment?
We understand that cat owners may be nervous about their cat's first grooming appointment. If any problems arise or the cat shows signs of stress, we allow up to 3 mini-breaks/"time outs". If problems persist, we will stop the grooming session and send them home. It might be that we will need to break the groom up in mini-sessions, or cat just might be having a bad day so we can reschedule & try again. We work with the cat, and let the cat call the shots.
Can I stay with my cat for grooming? We have chairs up front that you can use. We ask that you do not speak to us while grooming as we need to concentrate on our work for safety's sake. We ask that you stay out of the cats sight because usually when a cat knows their humans are up front, they want to go to them making the groom impossible.
What if I come back early and my cat isn't finished? The groom just finished, groomer will stop & cat will be sent home as is because it will be impossible to finish once the cat is excited to go home.
My cat peed/pooped/vomited in the carrier. Groomer will clean up everything the best as possible. A disposable potty pad lining the carrier helps alot. We recommend Nature's Miracle for cat urine, it's enzyme based, follow the instructions and it should work well as long as it isn't a cloth carrier that has been repeatedly peed in.
